How to read the score.
- 01
Measured in pixels
Google cuts a title at about 580 pixels on desktop. Sixty characters of lowercase fit; sixty characters of capitals and W's overflow. The preview shows exactly where the cut lands, so you shorten the right words.
- 02
The keyword, early
Give the checker the query you want the page to rank for. It checks that the words are there and that they sit in the first half of the title, where both Google and a reader scanning results actually look.
- 03
The click, as well as the ranking
A number, a power word and a question mark work on the reader: they are what makes a result get chosen among ten. The score weighs them because an impression earns its value through the click.
The one line people actually read.
A title tag works twice. It is still a direct on-page ranking signal, and it is the line the searcher reads before deciding where to click. Most titles are written for the first job and forgotten for the second, which is how a page ranks on page one and still gets few visits.
Google rewrites titles it judges unhelpful, and it does so more often for titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or identical across pages. A title that fits, names the query and says what the page does is the one Google keeps.
Check the three pages that get the most impressions in Search Console with the lowest click-through rate. Those are the titles costing you visits every day. A rewrite takes ten minutes; the change shows in the report within two weeks.
Questions
- What is an SEO title checker?
- An SEO title checker scores a title tag against the rules that decide whether it survives in a search result and earns the click: pixel width, the place of the target keyword, the presence of a number, a power word, a curiosity trigger, word count and structure. This one runs entirely in your browser and returns a score out of 100 with a per-rule breakdown, so you can see exactly which rule to fix.
- How long should an SEO title be?
- Between 50 and 60 characters, and under about 580 pixels. Google truncates on pixel width: a title full of capitals and wide letters gets cut earlier than one in lowercase. The checker measures both. Under 40 characters you are usually leaving relevance on the table.
- Where should the keyword go in the title?
- In the first half. Google weighs the opening of a title more, and a reader scanning ten results reads the first three or four words of each. "Internal link checker: free anchor text audit" beats "A free tool to audit anchor text with an internal link checker".
- Does the title tag still matter for rankings?
- It matters twice. It remains a direct on-page ranking signal, and it is the line people actually read in the results, so it drives click-through rate, which is what turns an impression into a visit. Google may rewrite a title it judges unhelpful, and a well-formed title is the most reliable way to keep the one you wrote.
- What is the difference between a title tag and an H1?
- The title tag lives in the page head and is what search engines and social previews display. The H1 is the heading readers see on the page itself. They can differ, and often should: the title tag carries the query wording and fits 60 characters, while the H1 can be longer and more editorial.
- Is this SEO title checker free?
- Yes: open access, and as many titles as you like. Everything is computed locally in your browser, so everything you type stays on your device.
