Stop words
Off, the generator drops "the", "of", "how", "le", "de", "comment". On, it keeps every word.

Your slug
yoursite.com/blog//
Aim for 3 to 5 words under 60 characters. The slug stays as is: shorten by hand, keeping the words the page should rank for.
How to read the result.
- 01
Lowercase, hyphens, plain letters
Every character goes through the same four steps: lowercase, accents transliterated (é becomes e), only letters and digits kept, spaces turned into single hyphens. The list under the slug says how many of each it found.
- 02
Stop words, out by default
Articles, prepositions and question words are grammar words: "the", "of", "how", "le", "de", "comment". The generator removes them in English and French and names the ones it took out. Flip the switch to keep them when the sentence needs them to make sense.
- 03
Five words, sixty characters
Past five words or sixty characters the slug gets a warning, and the cut is up to you. Google tolerates a long URL; it is simply truncated in search results and skimmed past in a shared link. Shorten by hand, keeping the words the page should rank for.
The URL is read before the page.
A slug shows up in three places before anyone reaches the page: the green line under the title in a search result, the link pasted in a message, and the address bar. In all three it is read as a promise of what the page is about, and a slug of eight words with a date and two stop words keeps that promise badly.
Google treats the words in a URL as a minor relevance signal and the hyphens between them as word separators. Minor still counts: between two equal pages, the one whose URL says "seo-slug-generator" has told Google one more time what it is. Underscores, capitals and percent-encoded accents give that signal away.
The slug is also the one on-page element that is costly to change afterwards. A title or a heading is rewritten in a minute; a URL needs a permanent redirect and loses a little on the way. Getting it right before publishing is the whole point of generating it.
Questions
- What is a URL slug?
- The part of a URL that identifies the page, after the domain and any folders. In /blog/seo-url-slug-generator/, the slug is seo-url-slug-generator. It is read by people in search results and shared links, and by search engines as a relevance signal.
- What makes a URL SEO-friendly?
- Lowercase, words separated by hyphens, plain letters and digits only, and short enough to read at a glance: three to five meaningful words. Drop the filler. Dates, category numbers and stop words lengthen the URL and make it age faster.
- Should I remove stop words from a slug?
- Usually yes, as long as the meaning holds. "how-to-write-a-brief" reads fine as "write-seo-brief", and shorter slugs survive truncation in search results. Keep a stop word when removing it changes the sense: that is what the "Keep stop words" switch is for.
- Hyphens or underscores?
- Hyphens. Google reads a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a joiner, so seo_slug_generator is one word to it and seo-slug-generator is three. The generator only ever produces hyphens, and collapses any run of spaces or dashes into a single one.
- Why remove accents and special characters?
- A URL can only carry ASCII letters, digits and a few punctuation marks. Anything else is percent-encoded when shared, so "référencement" becomes "r%C3%A9f%C3%A9rencement" in a pasted link. Transliterating é to e keeps the slug readable everywhere. Question marks, colons and quotes are dropped because they have a meaning of their own in a URL.
- Can I change a slug after publishing?
- You can, but the old URL must 301 to the new one, permanently. Changing a slug and skipping the redirect discards every link and every ranking signal the page had earned. It is the most common self-inflicted SEO loss there is.
- Is this SEO slug generator free?
- Yes: open access, and as many titles as you like. Everything runs locally in your browser, so everything you type stays on your device.
