How to read the report.

  1. 01

    Internal or external

Relative paths and links to your own domain are internal. Give the checker your domain and absolute links to it count as internal too. The split tells you whether the page sends readers deeper into your site or away from it.

  2. 02

    Anchors that say something

"Click here", "read more" and bare URLs are flagged as generic, empty anchors as empty. Each one is a link that could pass a topical signal to the destination. Rewrite it with the words the target page should rank for.

  3. 03

    Nofollow, where it belongs

A nofollow on an internal link withholds authority from your own page. The report flags every one. Keep nofollow for external links you prefer to keep at arm's length, and let the internal ones flow.

One page, forty signals.

Every internal link is a vote, and you cast all of them. Backlinks depend on other people; internal links depend on an afternoon. Even the best-written page stays marginal in Google's eyes until other pages link to it contextually.

The anchor is the part most sites waste. "Read more" repeated forty times wastes forty chances to tell Google something. The same forty links written as "how to map competitor keywords" or "the content sequence, explained" describe forty destinations. That wording is a ranking signal the destination page can only get this way.

The checker reads one page at a time. Run it on the three pages that bring most of your traffic: they are the ones with authority to pass, and the ones where a missing link costs the most. Then look at what they point to, and at what points to them.

Questions

Why does internal linking matter for SEO?
Internal links decide two things: which of your pages get discovered and crawled, and how authority flows between them. Google treats an orphan page as marginal, however good it is. Internal linking is also the only ranking lever you control entirely.
How many internal links should a page have?
The number matters less than the reason: every link should be there because a reader might follow it. In practice an article of 1,500 words carries 3 to 10 contextual links comfortably; in a navigation that repeats site-wide, only the first occurrence of each link counts.
What makes good anchor text?
Wording that describes the destination. "Click here" and a bare URL waste the signal entirely; the exact target keyword repeated on every link reads as manipulation. Descriptive and varied is the range to stay in.
What does rel="nofollow" do to an internal link?
It asks Google to hold back the ranking signals that would flow through it. On internal links it is almost always a mistake: you are withholding authority from your own pages. Reserve it for external links you prefer to keep at arm's length; your own pages deserve your full endorsement.
How do I get the HTML of a page?
In Chrome, Firefox or Safari, open the page, right-click and choose "View page source", then copy everything. For a draft page, paste the HTML your CMS or editor produces. The checker reads the markup as is, right in your browser: everything you paste stays on your device.
Does the checker count links in the navigation and footer?
Yes, every <a> tag in what you paste. To focus on the links inside the article, paste the article's HTML on its own. The direction column (internal or external) is based on the href: relative paths and your own domain, when you give it, count as internal.

Tools that go with it

Checking one page is one thing. Linking forty is another.

Tonaily writes every article with its internal links already in place, pointing at the pages you want to rank. Plug your site and see what it would link first.
