Meta Description Length: 155 Characters, Explained With …
A meta description is the sentence under your title in Google. Here is how long it should be, what to put first, and 5 examples you can copy.
The title is cut after “With”: the subject survives, and the word “Examples” falls past the cut. Shorten “Explained With Examples” to “With Examples” and it fits with room for a brand.

How to read the preview.
- 01
Two limits per tag
Each tag has a character count and a pixel width. The count is the habit; the width is what Google actually cuts on: about 580 px for the title, about 920 px for the description. The checker measures both in Arial, at 20 px and 14 px, the sizes of a desktop result.
- 02
The cut, where it falls
When a tag is too wide, the preview stops at the last whole word that fits and puts the ellipsis where Google would. Read what survives. If the subject is still there and only the brand is gone, the title does its job. If the subject is gone, move it forward.

The description is a pitch
Google rewrites descriptions on most queries, but keeps yours when it matches the words typed. Write it for that case: the query early, a number or a concrete promise, and an ending on what the reader gets. The six checks below the preview cover the mechanics; the wording is yours.
Two lines decide the click.
A search result is three lines: the breadcrumb, the title and the description. The title ranks and gets read. The description sits outside ranking and gets read anyway. Together they are the only copy of yours a searcher sees before choosing, and most sites write them last, in the CMS field, in the minute before publishing.
Google cuts on pixel width. Sixty characters of lowercase i and l fit with room to spare; sixty characters of capitals and W's overflow. "60 characters" is an average. Measured in the same font at the same size, the checker tells you whether your own title fits.
Start in Search Console. Sort pages by impressions, find the ones with a click-through rate under 2 percent on a first-page position, and paste their two tags here. A cut title or a description that trails off is usually the reason. Rewriting both takes ten minutes; the rate moves within two weeks.
Questions
- What is a meta tag checker?
- A meta tag checker reads the two tags a search result is made of, the title tag and the meta description, and tells you whether each one fits before Google truncates it. This one counts characters, measures the width in pixels in the font Google uses, and renders the result as it will appear in the results page. It runs entirely in your browser.
- What is the ideal meta description length?
- Around 155 characters, or about 920 pixels. Google truncates on pixel width, so the safe range shifts with the letters you use. Below 70 characters, you leave space that a competitor will happily fill.
- How long should a meta title be?
- 50 to 60 characters, and under about 580 pixels on desktop. Put the term you are targeting near the front: if the tail gets cut, you want the cut to fall on the brand name, with the subject intact.
- Why does Google rewrite my meta description?
- Because it prefers a passage from the page that matches the query wording. It happens on most queries. The description you write is still what appears when it does match, and it remains the snippet used by most social and chat previews.
- Does a missing meta description hurt rankings?
- Rankings stay the same, since the description sits outside ranking factors. Google then picks the passage itself, and its pick often differs from the one you would have chosen. Writing the description is how you keep control of the sentence that decides the click.
- Is this meta tag checker free?
- Yes: free, unlimited and ready to use right on this page. Everything is measured locally in your browser with a canvas and the same font Google uses, so everything you type stays on your device.
